HireMaker Job-getting tip number 78:

Strengths and Weaknesses.  Another of the "very common" questions, that you know you'll be asked, so we repeat ourselves: Prepare your answer to this in advance. A few HireMaker tips you may not have seen elsewhere:

  • You don't have to have an equal number of strengths and weaknesses.  You can list 4 strengths and only 2 weaknesses.  Or 3 strengths and 1 weakness.  Make the rules suit you!
  • Talk about a past weakness, and how you triumphed over it.  For example, "Earlier in my career, I didn't ask enough questions, and sometimes, that caused trouble.  Now, I know to ask the questions i need to ask up front, then I figure out the rest of the answers myself".
  • Talk about a tendency, something you would like to do, that you don't do.  For example, "If I had all day, I'd love to be able to put all sorts of shine and polish on my work.  However, things are so busy, I know I have to get the work done, make sure it's correct, then move on to the next project".
