Recruiter's Secrets Revealed

Although we're here to hopefully win your business and help you create a winning resume, HireMaker is also motivated to help people get jobs in these tough times.  That means helping you with tips beyond just the resume, such as where to post, how to handle the first phone contact, how to interview, and how to win the job.

What is a recruiter's secret?  A recruiter's secret is something that most people don't know.  Something that most people don't talk about.  They're not really secrets, but still, people aren't aware of all of them.  Here are just a few, that we're willing to share, but also that represent things that we know to put into your resume that you might not have thought of.

  • Recruiter's secret: We judge you by how well you know Microsoft Word, if we're looking at you for a job where we expect you to know it.  Did you indent your paragraph the right way?  Sometimes, it matters!
  • Recruiter's secret: Although many recruiters will never read your lengthy cover letters, they also don't like it when you send an empty email, with nothing but your resume attachment.
  • Recruiter's secret: Putting your name and city on the subject line of your email to a recruiter can help.  Imagine a recruiter, let's say from Tampa Florida, who just posted a great job to Monster.com.  Monday morning, the recruiter comes into work, and there are 300 resumes in their inbox.  As an experienced recruiter posting to the internet knows, perhaps only 75 of those 300 resumes will actually be people local to Tampa.  Just by seeing "Resume, JOE SMITH, Tampa FL" on the subject line of your email, they'll click on it and read your resume, because they know you're local.  Yes, they probably will get around to at least scanning the other 299 resumes, but you got preferential treatment by including your city on the subject line.
  • Recruiter's secret: When you fill out online application forms for companies on the internet, put your firstname and lastname in all capital letters.  You'll be that much easier to spot when they browse their list of hundreds of candidates.
