HireMaker Resumes Job-getting tip number 9:

If you smoke, you smell like smoke.  DO NOT SMOKE from the moment you finish your shower in the morning, until after your interview.  Maybe you're surprised at this advice.  Maybe everyone else has been too polite to say it to you.  But not us!  We'll tell it to you straight.  And if you smoke in your house, it might be even worse: Your clothes might smell like smoke too, in which case you may not be able to go to an interview without carrying a smoke smell with you.

Not all of the time, and not even most of the time, but definitely some of the time, smelling like smoke will cost you the job.

Hint: If you don't believe me, find someone you trust. Ask them in a nonchalant manner (so they won't think they need to be nice to you), ask "Hey, do you ever smell smoke on me when I come in from outside?"  if you ask properly, where they don't think you'll be upset with the answer, they'll tell it to you straight.
